Mexican Pastries Are the Perfect Ending

Mexican pastries have come about from centuries of ancient recipes, as well as influences by the many different countries which have occupied regions of the country at various times. It is easy to find influences from France, Philippines and Saudi Arabia to name a few. With the blending of these cultures came new types of desserts. It is also well known that the desserts that are found in one area of the country may be different than those found in another region. This is typical for all types of cuisines so it is not surprising to find this to be the case with Mexican desserts as well.

In the United States, one of the best known of the Mexican pastries is the empañada. In the country of origin, they are made with corn meal instead of flour. This is one of the major differences in many of the recipes that are found south of the border concerning desserts. This is something that can be served for breakfast or as a dessert after any meal. They are also great for snacks. Basically the doughy mixture is wrapped around the filling of choice. Apples are usually standard for this dessert but they can be anything and in the country of origin. They would probably be filled with whatever fruit is indigenous to the particular area of the country in which they are being made.

Another popular dessert is sopapilla. This particular doughy mixture is fried and then sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar with honey drizzled over it at the end. This is the traditional way they are served in the country. This might make one think of another type of dessert that is known in the United States as an elephant ear. Elephant ears are Mexican pastries that are also known as orejas. This type of pastry is a sweet bread, or pan dulce in Spanish.

During Halloween, it is common to find a dessert called calaverita. This is a skull shaped tartlet that is made with sugar and corn syrup as well as vanilla. They are then decorated according to the baker’s preferences. This type of dessert is a Mexican pastry that is made specifically to honor the Day of the Dead, which is celebrated in many countries. It is usually traditional to name each one after a departed loved one or friend. This is a celebration of those who have passed on by the people that are left behind to carry on in their absence.

Depending on what region of the country that one travels to there are many different types of Mexican pastries that are waiting for the next customer to indulge in their sweetness. There are many different types of offerings and just as many fillings and toppings. While in the United States, it is possible to find some variations of these great desserts, but only authentic restaurants that serve the cuisine that is made directly from authentic recipes can do them justice.
