Start Your Morning Off With A Mexican Breakfast

Mexican breakfast or brunch food might be just the thing to hit the spot on certain mornings.  While not everything available at breakfast time at the typical Mexican restaurant is an authentic dish, there are a number of hearty options that are, indeed, authentic to the region.  Traditionally, an early breakfast might be something as simple as a sweet roll and coffee, with the heavier fare postponed until the brunch meal of the late morning.

Plato de frutas is a plate of mixed fruit.  It might include mangoes, bananas, papayas, and melons.  It could include kiwis or strawberries as well.  It is likely to be presented in sliced form, with an artistic flair.  This dish can showcase the simple beauty of these nutritious fruits.

Other Mexican breakfast options include egg dishes that will be served along with refried beans.  Huevos Motuleños is one of these.  It has tortillas topped with fried eggs and covered in a tomato sauce.  This dish is topped with cheese and served with beans on the side.  It might also be made with ham, peas, and chilies.  Sometimes this dish will be served with bacon on top.

Chilaquiles are another option off of the morning menu.  This dish is something like a casserole.  It combines a number of different flavors and textures.  It starts with tortilla chips and salsa.  The chips get coated in the salsa while cooking on the stove top.  After the chips are covered, cheese and sour cream can be added.  The pan then gets transferred to the oven to bake a while.  After being removed from the oven, more sauce and cheese are added to it to help make this dish perfect.  Chilaquiles can also be served topped with fried eggs.  This may have initially become popular as a way to make use of stale tortillas.  As with plenty of other dishes, there are some variations to this recipe.  There are even some notable regional differences to this recipe, including the fact that in Sinaloa, the dish is made using white sauce instead of tomato sauce.

Another Mexican breakfast option is Huevos Rancheros.  This dish is traditionally made with fried eggs laid on top of fried corn tortillas and covered with salsa or sauce with chilies.  It might be served with guacamole, sliced avocado, and include a side of refried beans.  As a variation, it can also be made with scrambled eggs.

A chocolate dish can help complete the list of Mexican breakfast selections.  It may be a topping to a bun or it might be a drink, but keeping the chocolate on the menu is a must.  Another drink option includes sweetened water.  It has milk, vanilla, and cinnamon and is called horchata.  This drink sometimes includes rice and is made in the blender.

While eggs are an undeniable front-runner when it comes to Mexican breakfast options, there are eggless options to choose from as well.  Since there are plenty of different meal choices, each with a number of potential variations, the possibilities for the dishes are nearly endless.
